Embracing ADD/ADHD
When I was a child, I was repeatedly told the narrative that I can’t do this or that in school. My first grade teacher even told me that I would never be able to read! Turns out, obviously, I do know how to read. In fact I love to read! When I was a kid I was easily bored and when I didn’t want to do something, I just didn’t do it! Looking back and thinking about what I know about ADD/ADHD now, my narrative of myself was defined by what society and school thought I should be doing. ADD/ADHD is not a burden to ourselves or to others, but is a gift. Is it easy for the person living with ADD/ADHD or their family members? Not always! It may be really hard. It’s okay to ask for help and to practice tools that help us navigate a world that isn’t always friendly. It’s okay to take medication or to decide not to take medication. Become friends with your ADD/ADHD and/or become friends with your child’s ADD/ADHD, and learn to accept it’s challenges and recognize it’s gifts.
I end this note with this poem.
